April Means Diamonds
April’s birthstone is the diamond. Good news for those with an April birthday, but unnerving for their partners; who can be wary of the myths surrounding this most precious gem and shy of the expense of securing a good natural gem.
So let us dispel some of the myths:
Yes, a diamond is the hardest gemstone, giving more design flexibility and enabling it to be worn without some of the risks associated with softer gems. But, you may still break or damage with careless wear, particularly if it has been badly set into a ring.
No, diamonds are not always white. Certainly the whitest (“D” colour) are amongst the most valuable, but diamonds are also found in natural colours including pink, blue, yellow and green. Often these natural fancy coloured diamonds are rarer and more valuable than similarly sized white diamonds.
Yes, colour and clarity are important determinants of a diamond’s quality/value, but the most critical determinant is its make – the quality of the cutting of the gem. A poorly cut diamond will look like any white stone, but an excellently cut diamond is one that will sparkle brilliantly.
Yes, a diamond is special because of its visible brilliance and “fire” – caused by the refraction and dispersion of light as it travels into and is internally reflected out of the diamond.
Yes, there are some very good synthetic diamonds on the market now. But more worrying are the newer treatments designed to hide the faults in poor quality diamonds eg., fracture filling.
No, the diamond is not the rarest gemstone. It is often perceived as the most exclusive of gems, but many other gemstones are infact rarer eg., ruby, opal, tanzanite and some varieties of tourmaline.
Yes, the diamond dominates the jewellery market, but is it really “a girl’s best friend”? Perhaps its desirability is merely a clever marketing ploy by DeBeers, which effectively controls the global supply of diamonds. We think so; hence our passion for coloured gemstones, including natural coloured diamonds.
Celebrate your partner’s birthday this month with his/her birthstone – a precious diamond in white, pink, yellow, green, blue. Our trained gemologists are available to assist you dispel the myths and ensure that you select a beautiful diamond. We are also now stocking a collection of diamonds of all colours in a range of our most special unique handcrafted designs.
